The Opel Grandland GSe is set to make a comeback, with the possibility of being fully electric.

A prototype cloaked in camouflage suggests the imminent GSe trim, which is anticipated to present a sportier design for the flagship version of the lineup. It appears that the prototype is a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) that might feature an upgraded chassis configuration.

Opel, the German auto brand acquired by Stellantis from GM, is gearing up for the introduction of a new generation of its largest SUV, targeting buyers seeking a combination of practicality and performance without significant compromises on either side.

Continuing from its predecessor, the highest trim of the new Opel Grandland is likely to don the GSe badge. This variant usually has a slightly sportier appearance compared to the other models in the range, and recent spy photographs of a lightly camouflaged prototype testing in Europe indicate some forthcoming styling changes.

While the prototype is entirely black, Opel might consider painting the bumper cladding, side skirts, and wheel arches in the vehicle's body color to visually differentiate the GSe model. The use of duct tape on the front and rear suggests potential updates beneath, which could include redesigned bumpers or aerodynamic adjustments.

Additionally, the black alloy wheels with a diamond-cut finish seem to be larger and feature a different design than those found on the Grandland GS Line.

      Hybrid Heritage, Electric Future

Similar to its platform counterparts, the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, the Grandland benefits from the versatility of the STLA Medium architecture that accommodates mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.

The Grandland GSe prototype lacks the front bumper intake present in trims equipped with combustion engines, indicating it will likely utilize a zero-emission powertrain. If confirmed, this would represent a notable performance enhancement over its plug-in hybrid predecessor.

The GSe, which stands for "Grand Sport Electric", is expected to feature a dual electric motor configuration. Currently, the high-output version of the electric Grandland produces 320 hp (240 kW / 326 PS), which exceeds the 296 hp (220 kW / 300 PS) of the older Grandland GSe's plug-in hybrid variant, as well as the new Astra GSe warm hatch/estate, which has 222 hp (165 kW / 225 PS).

Interestingly, the previous Grandland GSe did not provide more power than the standard plug-in hybrid version, instead emphasizing an upgraded chassis setup. It remains to be seen if Opel will maintain this approach or increase performance this time around.

      When Can We Expect It?

The Opel Grandland GSe is anticipated to launch in late 2025. The SUV might be accompanied by sportier variants of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, which could adopt the classic GTI badge that is confirmed to make a return. However, the upcoming Citroen C5 Aircross twin may forgo a performance version entirely, given its focus on comfort.
