Survey Reveals 67% Of Americans Are Unlikely To Purchase A Tesla, With Many Pointing Fingers At Musk | Carscoops
Tesla is perceived only slightly more positively than its vocal CEO.
A recent study indicates that many Americans hold an unfavorable view of both Tesla and Musk.
55% consider Musk unfavorably, while 49% share the same sentiment towards Tesla.
A significant majority is not interested in purchasing or leasing a Tesla, partly due to Musk's influence.
It appears that Germans are not alone in rejecting Tesla. A recent poll revealed that an astounding 67% of Americans would not consider owning or leasing one of the company's electric vehicles, with Elon Musk being a contributing factor.
Among respondents, 20% identified Musk as the "entire reason" they would avoid getting a Tesla, while 17% mentioned he was "part of the reason." This indicates that Musk alone is deterring 37% of Americans, compared to the 27% who said he had no influence on their decision to steer clear of Tesla.
In a sizable survey, 94% of Germans expressed they wouldn't buy a Tesla following Musk's political behavior.
While Musk once enjoyed a near-cult status among his supporters, that seems to have diminished. When asked if Musk was a reason for owning or considering a Tesla, only 1% responded affirmatively regarding him as the "whole reason" or "part of the reason."
The survey, conducted by Yahoo News and YouGov, included 1,677 online interviews with U.S. adults from March 20 to 24, 2025, and has a margin of error of about 2.6%. It found that a majority harbor an unfavorable opinion of Musk, with 45% expressing a very unfavorable sentiment and another 10% holding a somewhat unfavorable view. In contrast, only 21% view him very favorably.
Tesla’s favorability ratings mirror Musk's since 49% of Americans perceive the automaker unfavorably, while just 37% have a favorable opinion.
Moreover, 48% of respondents disapproved of the handling of Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, despite 49% supporting cuts to federal spending. Additionally, 52% believe Musk is more focused on personal gain than on benefiting the country.
Overall, the outlook for Musk and Tesla appears challenging. Given the extent of public anger, including attacks on dealerships and vehicles, such a response is anticipated.
