Xiaomi Hiring BMW Executives for European Research and Development Facility | Carscoops
The Chinese company is currently in the process of hiring experienced staff for its new facility in Europe.
Xiaomi is presently only selling its electric vehicles (EVs) in China but has plans for global expansion.
Some key appointments include Rudolf Dittrich, who has prior experience with BMW and two Formula 1 teams.
The company has stated it is "in the process of planning" its research and development (R&D) center in Europe.
Xiaomi aims to establish itself as a significant global player in the EV market and is actively seeking experienced individuals from other companies, having already hired at least five senior executives from BMW. These employees will be positioned at the brand's European R&D center, although the specific location has not yet been disclosed.
A search on LinkedIn indicates that Xiaomi recruited Rudolf Dittrich from BMW last year to lead its European R&D center. Dittrich has spent 15 years at the German automotive giant and has experience with the Williams and Sauber Formula 1 teams. Additionally, Dusan Sarac has joined Xiaomi's European operations after years at BMW and Rolls-Royce.
Reports from Reuters confirm that Jannis Hellwig has also transitioned to the Chinese EV brand and will take on the role of senior engineer for performance development and integration. The technology firm is additionally seeking a senior automotive designer, senior automotive exterior designer, and vehicle dynamics engineers based in Munich, Germany.
The precise location of the technology giant's European R&D facility remains undisclosed, with the brand simply stating it is "in the process of planning."
Xiaomi is not only attracting talent from German companies but also aims to sell 350,000 EVs in China this year. Achieving this goal would allow it to exceed the combined 2024 EV sales of Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche. This would be a significant accomplishment for Xiaomi, especially considering it just began production of the electric SU7 sedan a year ago.
With the recently launched SU7 Ultra, which rivals hypercars, Xiaomi seems to be gaining momentum. Furthermore, 2025 is anticipated to be a crucial year for the company as it begins production and deliveries of the YU7. This new electric SUV is priced lower than the Tesla Model Y and, given the worldwide demand for SUVs, it is expected to outperform sales of the SU7 sedan.
