Ford F-150 Lightning OTA Update Reduces Fast Charging Times by 5-6 Minutes | Carscoops

Owners of the 131 kWh F-150 Lightning now experience charging times of 39 minutes, a reduction from the previous 44-45 minutes.

This update enhances charging speeds for both the 98 kWh and 131 kWh models of the electric vehicle.

Previously, models with the 98 kWh battery could charge from 15-80% in approximately 32 minutes.

The over-the-air software update also improves the electronic parking brake system.

Last month, Ford started distributing an over-the-air software update to F-150 Lightning owners across the U.S. While the update includes only a few modifications, the most significant change is an enhancement in DC fast charging times, which is sure to be appreciated by owners nationwide.

Prior to the update, F-150 Lightning models equipped with the standard 98 kWh battery could theoretically charge from 15-80% in around 32 minutes, while the larger 131 kWh pack required about 38 minutes for the same charge. Ford’s release notes for the OTA update do not provide specific details regarding the improvements, only stating that the "charging rate at DC fast chargers" has been increased. Fortunately, an owner has shared a clearer understanding of the enhanced charging speed.

The owner of the YouTube channel State of Charge has a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat featuring the 131 kWh Extended Range battery. Initially, charging from 10-80% took him 44-45 minutes. After the recent software update, the F-150 Lightning drew 500 Amps when connected to the EVgo fast charger, charging at 180 kW.

Now, the truck charges from 10-80% in 39 minutes and 43 seconds, reducing the time by 4-6 minutes compared to before. While the time savings may not be substantial, every minute counts, making charging more convenient for owners.

In addition to speed enhancements, Ford has addressed several annoying issues. They have successfully eliminated some frustrating false alerts on the instrument panel. Moreover, the software for the electronic parking brake has been adjusted for “more consistent performance.” Although it may seem like a minor update, any improvement in an electric vehicle's functionality is beneficial, even if it involves just the parking brake.

Carscoops has reached out to Ford for additional information about the software update and will update this post once we receive a response.
