The dash cam stands out as one of the rare in-car gadgets that can truly prove useful. It can record astonishing events like planes crashing onto roads, provide evidence of insurance fraud attempts, and capture instances of road rage. One driver was grateful to have one after a tense interaction with a Hummer H2, which appeared to straddle the line between a potential insurance scam and severe road rage.
This incident took place earlier this week in Denver, as reported by a Reddit user. The footage is dated July 19, 2023, but the user mentions that their camera resets whenever the vehicle is turned off, a claim seemingly supported by the wintery backdrop. The 21-second clip begins with a black Hummer H2 crossing a double-yellow line in a 30-mph zone for overtaking. The SUV appears to be traveling much faster than the car it is passing. It then merges back into its lane, abruptly brakes, and slowly starts reversing. The vehicle capturing the footage also backs up, appearing to engage in a reverse car chase. The H2 driver backs up again before speeding off.
Fortunately, no one was injured, and no vehicles were damaged, largely due to the camera car being in the right place at the right time. If a third car had been following them, the Reddit user might have been unable to reverse, resulting in a different outcome captured by the camera. The user called 911 to report the H2 driver, but there’s no indication of how law enforcement responded.
Could this be an instance of attempted insurance fraud similar to the recent viral video from New York? The H2 driver might have tried to back into the car behind to claim he was hit, or was it merely a case of road rage? The H2 driver might have intended to get close to the camera car to step out and instigate a confrontation. It remains unclear. Although the H2's driving is clearly illegal, aggressive, and hazardous, the video does not reveal what occurred prior to the SUV passing the user’s vehicle. Was that conveniently omitted?
“All the first shows is that I made a left turn into the lane he was in, but there was plenty of space for me to turn, then I executed a slightly wider right turn to avoid my right tire hitting a large pothole, and the guy possibly thought I was blocking his way and accelerated to pass me,” ArtifactWorld37 speculated in a now-deleted comment.
What is certain is that reckless driving is perilous, irrespective of the justification behind it, and being courteous to fellow drivers is often undervalued.
