GM Offers Solution for Dented Roofs on Colorado and Canyon Models Caused by Car Washes | Carscoops
General Motors' solution involves adding stiffening patches and a reinforcing bow to the underside of the roof panel.
Recent Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon models from 2023 to 2025 now come with improved roof panels.
The issue arises during the high-pressure drying phase at touchless car washes, where the affected models can sustain dents.
General Motors has released a service bulletin to tackle this concern for vehicles owned by customers.
When thinking of robust pickup trucks like the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, one might assume they can withstand the harshest conditions. Thus, it’s surprising to discover that since 2023, these GM trucks have faced a peculiar problem: their roof panels are excessively flexible, to the point that a visit to a touchless car wash can result in dents. What’s causing this, and how is GM addressing it?
Numerous Colorado and Canyon owners have noted that during the high-pressure drying stage at car washes, the roof panels flex excessively. It turns out that this flexibility allowed the drying jets to create visible dents. As complaints increased, GM swiftly released a service bulletin for the 2023 and later models, detailing a solution for the issue and assuring that no new Colorado and Canyon vehicles will leave the factory with these overly flexible roof panels.
GM's Solution: Reinforcing the Roof, Step by Step
To rectify the problem, GM plans to install stiffening patches on the underside of the roof panels. Additionally, they will place a metal bow vertically underneath the roof, secured with five screws, structural adhesive, and rivets. Once this support structure is installed, GM will conclude the fix by adding the headliner, according to GM Authority. Simple but effective—at least that’s the intention.
For those who possess a 2023-2025 Colorado or Canyon made before February 3, 2025, the positive news is that you can also reinforce your roof. However, if your truck’s roof has already suffered damage—say, from a dent caused by high-pressure drying or other factors—you must address those repairs before the strengthening process can commence.
Interestingly, some owners have reported that roof panels remain prone to dents even after repairs have been made. If this is the case, it is advisable to contact your local GM dealer to investigate whether there are additional underlying issues that need to be resolved.
