FedEx Van Trapped in Rising Tide During Faulty Island Delivery

If you are expecting a package from FedEx near Wellfleet, Massachusetts, along Cape Cod, there may be some unfortunate news for you. One of the company's vans became trapped in the tide while crossing the Lieutenant Island Bridge. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed, but the van remained stuck in the water for several hours.
This incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, March 1. The driver was en route back to the mainland after making deliveries on Lieutenant Island when the rising tide unexpectedly affected him. This was not an extreme weather event; according to The Weather Channel, the causeway floods twice daily, and residents of Lieutenant Island typically schedule their activities around the tides.
Dramatic footage captured by NBC 10 WJAR depicts the white van with water levels reaching the top of its wheel arches and the passenger-side sliding door ajar. The current appeared strong enough that a lighter vehicle might have been swept away.
Fortunately, the driver chose to wait for assistance rather than attempt to swim to safety. Crews from the Wellfleet Fire Department arrived at the van in a Zodiac-type boat around 11:30 a.m. to rescue the driver, and everyone was back on shore before noon, with no reported injuries.
FedEx was able to retrieve its van once the tide went down, although there is no information about its condition. Water and vehicles rarely mix well, and saltwater is especially detrimental. Even if the engine bay wasn’t submerged and there is no severe mechanical damage, being immersed in the Atlantic for several hours can cause significant issues to the underbody. FedEx informed Boston.com that all undamaged packages have already been delivered, and they will contact customers whose parcels were affected by the water, though it remains unclear how many packages were saved.
