      Vintage Road Racing

Since we already took up your Friday afternoon with BMW's new online encyclopedia, how about spending this Saturday relaxing with some free vintage racing videos?

The aptly titled Vintage Road Racing is your source for road race footage from the 1960s. This series is available for free on Tubi and currently has a first season consisting of seven episodes that cover events like Daytona, Le Mans, Nassau, and Sebring. Each episode runs for a maximum of 28 minutes, with the longest episode (#3) stretching to 38 minutes to showcase the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is well-deserved.

That iconic race featured an intense battle to the finish between Ford and Porsche. Spoiler alert: Ford took the win, with the legendary Jacky Ickx driving in the final hours. However, Ickx also faced a different struggle that year—his confrontation with the Le Mans start.

Just a day before the race, Ickx voiced his concerns about the race's hazardous running start. Known as the “Le Mans” style start, drivers began on the opposite side of the track while their cars lined up along the pit wall in qualifying order. Once the race began, they had to dash to their vehicles, strap in, start the engines, and take off. Ickx chose to walk instead. The following year, Le Mans drivers started the race already seated in their cars.

If you decide to settle on the couch, you could binge the entire Vintage Road Racing series in just three-and-a-half hours. Alternatively, you might want to use that time searching for that elusive 10-mm socket. The choice is yours. There is no information available about whether additional episodes will be released or if they even exist.

The series is curated by Choppertown, an entertainment hub for car and motorcycle lovers. Their YouTube channel primarily highlights two-wheeled content, but they also offer a Certified Vintage Collection, which includes retro footage of road racing, Trans Am, and drag racing—all accessible for free on Tubi.
