Reported UAW Document Suggests New Mustang Shelby GT500 Set for 2026 | Carscoops
A supposedly leaked document indicates that Ford may be working on a Mustang Shelby GT500 for the year 2026.
According to the document, the vehicle is expected to feature a Legend engine, which could enter production by the end of this year.
If the leak is accurate, this new engine is likely based on the supercharged 5.2-liter V8.
Shelby American has recently ventured on its own with the Shelby GT350, but the new document hints that Ford might be developing a Mustang Shelby GT500. This model could debut as early as next year, filling the substantial gap between the Mustang Dark Horse and Mustang GTD.
While it's essential to approach any leaked document cautiously, one that recently appeared on Reddit is reportedly from UAW Local 600, located in Dearborn, Michigan. Its members work at various plants including the Dearborn Engine Plant, Dearborn Stamping, and the Dearborn Truck Plant.
The document states, “I predict an afternoon shift will be added towards the end of 2025 on the Niche assembly line. This increase in volume is for the 2026 Mustang Shelby GT500.” The anonymous author adds, “I eagerly await the start of production for the engines of such an iconic vehicle, which will be named Legend.”
According to Road & Track, the Niche engine line currently produces the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that powers the F-150 Raptor. This could imply that the rumored Legend engine might be a variation of this V8.
While it may be premature to draw conclusions at this stage, the Mustang GTD boasts a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 generating 815 hp (608 kW / 826 PS) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque, while the previous Shelby GT500 featured a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 760 hp (567 kW / 771 PS) and 625 lb-ft (846 Nm) of torque.
