Toyota Hints at Electric Crossover, Announces Launch on March 11 | Carscoops
The production version of the 2022 bZ Compact SUV concept is expected to be smaller and lower than the current bZ4X SUV.
Toyota will unveil an all-electric crossover on March 11, having released a teaser image and video featuring just a silhouette. The design remains faithful to the 2022 bZ SUV concept.
Looking back to 2022, you might remember a strikingly designed electric crossover coupe known as the bZ Compact SUV concept from Toyota. Next month, this concept will transition to production, potentially enhancing the company's electric vehicle prospects.
Today, Toyota announced that it will present an “all-new exciting and surprising” battery electric vehicle (BEV) on March 11 (March 12 in Central European Time) alongside a teaser image and video that, while not revealing much, confirm that it is indeed the 2022 concept materializing.
The teaser showcases a sleek fastback form, highlighted by curvy hips and front fenders. The roofline is low, yet the body appears elevated enough to provide the “elevated driving dynamics” that Toyota mentions in its brief. The automaker also promises “surprising space, comfort, and versatility,” along with a strong emotional appeal.
While Toyota does not disclose the name of the crossover, recent reports suggest that it may not carry the bZ designation, considering even its larger sibling, the bZ4X, is rumored to abandon the confusing mix of numbers and letters for a more coherent name later this year.
The teaser does not provide extensive details about the new EV’s technical specifications, but we can infer its size from the concept's dimensions released in 2022. At that time, Toyota stated that the bZ Compact SUV measured 4.54 m (178.7 inches) in length and 1.56 m (61.4 inches) in height. If the production version adheres to these measurements, it will be 152 mm (6 inches) shorter and 90 mm (3.5 inches) lower than the Toyota bZ4X.
No power outputs or battery capacities were disclosed for the concept, but Toyota’s new Urban Cruiser electric SUV, which is smaller than the upcoming crossover, offers options of 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery packs.
Single-motor, front-wheel-drive versions of the Suzuki e-Vitara counterpart generate 142 hp (106 kW / 144 PS) with the smaller battery and 172 hp (128 kW / 174 PS) with the larger option, whereas the available dual-motor powertrain raises the total output to 182 hp (135 kW / 184 PS).
The gallery below features a teaser shot of the new production crossover alongside multiple images of the 2022 bZ Compact SUV concept.
