Xiaomi SU7 Surpasses Tesla's Model 3 Sales in China | Carscoops
Xiaomi surpassed the Tesla Model 3 in sales with its SU7 during the period from April 2024 to January 2025.
In total, Xiaomi sold 162,384 SU7s nationwide, while Tesla managed to sell 152,748 Model 3s in the same timeframe in China.
The company is now setting its sights on the Tesla Model Y with its upcoming YU7 electric SUV.
Entering China's competitive EV market is challenging, yet Chinese tech powerhouse Xiaomi has achieved what many established car manufacturers could not: launching its first electric vehicle that outsold the Tesla Model 3—at least in China. Sales statistics from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) for the period from April 2024 to January 2025 show that Xiaomi’s SU7 outperformed the Model 3, marking a significant achievement for the company's automotive introduction.
Production of the stylish SU7 commenced in April 2024, with customer deliveries following shortly afterward. It had a strong debut, selling at least 30,000 units across April, May, and June. Specifically, in April, 7,058 units were sold, surpassing the 5,065 Model 3s sold that month. Notably, the demand for the SU7 continued to rise steadily throughout 2024, defying the typical decline in interest often seen with new electric vehicles.
The Tesla Model 3 concluded the April-June quarter with 38,446 sales, significantly outpacing the SU7. From July to September, Tesla maintained its lead, selling 52,052 units nationwide compared to 39,790 SU7s during that same quarter. However, Xiaomi’s sales surged in the last quarter of the year, easily surpassing the Model 3.
In that period, while Tesla sold 52,241 Model 3s, Xiaomi moved 69,697 SU7s, including 20,726 in October, 23,156 in November, and 25,815 in December. The strong demand for the Xiaomi continued into January 2025, with 22,897 units sold. Although this was lower than December's performance, the Chinese New Year typically sees a dip in vehicle sales. Tesla, in January, sold only 8,009 Model 3s.
Overall, as reported by X user Troy Teslike, referencing official data from the China Passenger Car Association, Xiaomi delivered 162,384 SU7s between April 2024 and January 2025, exceeding the 152,748 Model 3s sold by Tesla during the same period.
This marks the first time total sales of the Xiaomi SU7 have surpassed those of Tesla's Model 3 in China since deliveries started in April 2024.
Can Xiaomi Compete with the Tesla Model Y?
Additionally, Xiaomi is pursuing Tesla with its second model. In December, it unveiled the new YU7, which directly competes with the Tesla Model Y. Similar to the SU7, it may offer a lower price point while featuring more standard amenities and a more upscale design.
Considering the increasing popularity of crossovers and SUVs in recent years, it is quite possible that the YU7 could outsell the SU7. However, whether it can surpass the Model Y remains uncertain. Last year, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling new car in China, with 480,309 units sold. Achieving or exceeding those figures will be a significant challenge for Xiaomi.
