The Wheel Design is the Highlight of Rivian’s R1 California Dune Limited Edition.

Limited editions of already high-priced SUVs and pickups are quite prevalent nowadays, but the California Dune series being unveiled by Rivian today has certainly captured our interest. They feature several attractive modifications inside and out, as one would expect, but what particularly stands out are the new, exclusive 20-inch wheels that give the R1S and R1T a rally-inspired appearance.
Both limited-edition R1s are painted in a fresh color named California Dune and come equipped with the All-Terrain Package, a spare tire, and a reinforced underbody shield that functions like a large skid plate. Rivian is also including accessories such as recovery boards with mounts. The interior boasts a two-tone upholstery in Sandstone and Black Mountain, complemented by matching Sandstone Chilewich floor mats.
Yet again, we’re focused on the wheels. They remind us of designs from OZ Racing that are featured on vehicles designed for the World Rally Championship. The trend of drawing inspiration from rallying for wheel designs is gaining traction; for example, the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally features similarly styled rims, albeit in white. Rivian’s wheels are available in either Satin Graphite or the body-matching California Dune.
Rivian has not made any changes to the drivetrain for the California Dune Edition, but both electric vehicles are equipped with the Tri-Motor system. They produce power from three electric motors (one at the front and two at the rear), generating a combined 850 horsepower and 1,103 lb-ft of torque. The brand claims a zero-to-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds and an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 329 miles. With a Soft Sand driving mode that adjusts pedal response and damping, these California Dune EVs should be capable of tackling California’s dunes.
Now available for purchase, the R1T California Dune Edition and the R1S California Dune Edition have starting prices of $99,900 and $105,900, respectively, not including delivery and applicable incentives. There is currently no information on how Rivian plans to limit production. When we inquired, a spokesperson mentioned that they are not yet ready to disclose production numbers for these models. What is clear is that the desirable wheels are exclusive to the California Dune vehicles. Timeless style has always come at a price.
