NASCAR icon Jeff Gordon expresses interest in participating in a sequel to ‘Days of Thunder’.

      Count racing personalities among those interested in a sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1990 racing film Days of Thunder—at least one, that is. NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon shared with the media during the Daytona 500 this weekend that he not only supports reviving the franchise but is also ready to take part in the project.

      “I’ve definitely discussed it with Tom because I want him to pursue the project,” Gordon told the Associated Press. “We want to be involved if it comes to fruition.”

      Cruise has been advocating for a return to the franchise, aiming for a storyline similar to that of Top Gun: Maverick. Even though Days of Thunder may not hold the same critical acclaim as the original Top Gun, its cult status among racing enthusiasts has kept it relevant well beyond its initial release. After all, if we hadn't seen Days of Thunder, it’s quite improbable that the comedic gem Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby would have come into existence.

      And without Talladega Nights, where would Kevin Harvick reside?

      “We’ll see what transpires,” Gordon told the Associated Press. “If that doesn’t materialize, I’m confident there’s a project out there that will bring NASCAR back to the big screen, whether it be a really exciting docuseries or something even beyond what we’re currently witnessing.”

      Like IndyCar, NASCAR has already dipped into the documentary realm after the success of Formula 1’s “Drive to Survive” series.

      While Gordon’s support is undoubtedly promising, it hasn’t been accompanied by any official confirmation from Cruise or Paramount, the rights holder for both Days of Thunder and Top Gun. As of our last update, the sequel remained just an idea without a budget, director, or script.
