Nissan Hints at Upcoming Models; Rogue PHEV Appears to Be a Rebranded Mitsubishi Outlander | Carscoops

A new version of the SUV will incorporate the next-generation e-Power self-charging hybrid system in 2026.

Nissan has hinted at six upcoming models for 2025 and 2026, which include two new variants of the Rogue.

The Rogue PHEV may be a rebadged Mitsubishi, while the Rogue e-Power will showcase a distinctive design.

These will be accompanied by the new generation Micra and Leaf EVs, as well as two updated models for the Japanese market.

During its Q3 financial results presentation for the fiscal year 2024, Nissan made some notable announcements. In addition to plans to save $2.59 billion via layoffs and efficiency initiatives after the collapse of merger discussions with Honda, the automaker previewed six upcoming models expected to launch in 2025 and 2026.

      Suspiciously Similar Rogue PHEV

In 2025, the Nissan Rogue (X-Trail) will receive a plug-in hybrid option, with a updated e-Power hybrid expected in 2026. A point of intrigue is the obscured teaser image of the PHEV, which closely resembles the Mitsubishi Outlander. While it's difficult to make a definitive conclusion from a heavily shadowed preview, the similarities are notable.

The current Nissan Rogue (X-Trail), launched in 2020, shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Outlander but features an entirely different exterior design. This raises questions about why Nissan would not apply its own design language to the plug-in hybrid variant, possibly hinting at efforts to minimize R&D and production expenses.

      Current-generation Rogue and Potential Cost-Cutting

Introduced in 2020, the current Nissan Rogue (also known as the X-Trail in certain regions) utilizes the same platform as the Mitsubishi Outlander, yet boasts a completely distinct body. This raises the question of why Nissan might opt to forgo its own aesthetics for the plug-in hybrid. One potential reason could be a drive for significant cost reduction in both R&D and production. Alternatively, it may simply be coincidental that the Rogue PHEV appears similar to the Outlander, and it might just receive a refreshed design.

Rogue e-Power and the Next-Generation Leaf

The Rogue e-Power, anticipated to launch in 2026, appears to have a more unique design. The teaser reveals updated LED headlights and the recognizable Rogue shape, indicating a mid-cycle update. It will be powered by Nissan’s third-generation e-Power hybrid system, which the company claims is 20% more efficient than the first generation. Additionally, Nissan has stated that this powertrain will also be utilized in the Qashqai.

Beyond the Rogue series, Nissan is set to launch the next-generation Leaf in 2025, designed as a fully electric crossover positioned below the Ariya. Alongside it, a new small electric hatchback for Europe will debut, which strongly resembles the next-generation Micra. Nissan has previously mentioned that this EV supermini will be developed by Renault, indicating it may be a sibling model to the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, albeit with Nissan-specific styling.

Additionally, Nissan will roll out facelifted kei cars and a revamped large minivan in Japan in 2026, likely representing updates for the Dayz and Elgrand. The final new model mentioned in the presentation is the Nissan N7 electric sedan, which has already been introduced in China.

Completing the lineup, Nissan will present updated kei cars and a refreshed large minivan for the Japanese market in 2026, likely facelifts of the Dayz and Elgrand. Lastly, they showcased the Nissan N7 electric sedan, which has already debuted in China.
