Dodge CEO Open to the Idea of an Affordable Halo Sports Car | Carscoops

Dodge's CEO has proposed the idea of a budget-friendly halo vehicle priced below $30,000. He mentioned that the car could cater to budget-conscious consumers as a “weekend car.” While this concept may seem far-fetched, the executive indicated a commitment to focusing on affordability.

With the Chevrolet Camaro no longer in production and the Dodge Challenger now transformed into the expensive Charger Daytona, affordable sports cars are increasingly hard to find. Nonetheless, models like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Ford Mustang, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GR86 start in the low $30,000 range.

Dodge CEO Matt McAlear recently noted a potential opportunity for both an entry-level and a high-end halo vehicle. In an interview with The Drive, he referenced the growing popularity of vehicles like the Polaris Slingshot and RZR.

He then discussed pricing, suggesting that a model priced "sub-$30,000" could attract those seeking a "weekend car." He envisioned a relatively simple vehicle without heated seats or numerous driver assistance features—essentially, something that is both affordable and enjoyable.

The executive emphasized the need for the company to be “original like the Viper,” bringing a unique product to market that distinctly represents Dodge. He clarified that it would not be designed to compete directly with the Corvette, Camaro, or Mustang, as it would adopt a “different kind of performance.”

Although his comments are quite vague and not definitive, it appears that Dodge is still pursuing its sporty ambitions. However, creating a sports car under $30,000 seems unlikely due to inflation, regulations, and an escalating trade war.

Nevertheless, McAlear seems aware that Stellantis’ high prices are not effective. He stated, "Having a value play just to get people on the showroom floor is important," emphasizing the need to make their vehicles more affordable for a broader audience.
