The dealership promptly terminated the employee for leaving the offensive message.
The customer alleges that the dealer attempted to discreetly remove the sticker after returning the vehicle.
Kunes Buick GMC labeled the message as "despicable and indefensible."
A Buick and GMC dealership located in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, is facing backlash after it was uncovered that an employee placed a racial slur on a customer's oil change sticker. The dealership stated it has let go of the employee responsible for the sticker, but for the car's owner, the harm has already been inflicted.
The car in question belongs to local resident Makayla Starks. She bought her Nissan Rogue from Kunes Buick GMC – Oak Creek last year and returned in January for a free oil change. Unbeknownst to her, an employee had added the N-word to the oil change sticker on her windshield.
Speaking to Fox 6 Now, Starks mentioned that shortly after collecting her car, she received multiple texts and calls from dealership employees. One message from a lot attendant claimed that a service technician had left a tool in the engine bay of her SUV and wanted to come to her house to retrieve it. Starks asserted that no tool had been left in her Nissan, and she soon discovered the actual reason for the dealer's contact.
Further messages from a dealership employee indicated that staff wanted to remove the offensive sticker from the vehicle and replace it without her knowledge. It was only at that point that Starks inspected the service sticker and discovered the racial slur on it.
“It was the N-word,” Starks recounted. “When I first saw the sticker, I cried – immediately – I just sat there in my car and cried.”
In a Facebook post, the dealership explained that the sticker was intended as a joke to a co-worker and that it never meant for a second copy to be printed and stuck on Starks’ vehicle. Kunes Buick GMC referred to the incident as a “despicable and indefensible act” and confirmed that the employee was promptly dismissed.
“We are extremely disturbed and saddened by the incident regarding one of our employees and a customer, impacting her sense of safety and dignity,” the dealership stated. “We want to be clear: this behavior and the hateful sentiment it represents are completely contrary to our company's values. There is no tolerance for racism or discrimination within our dealership or community.”
Earlier this month, a small group of community members protested outside the dealership. Meanwhile, Starks and her attorney have called for a community boycott and are demanding the identities of all employees involved.
