We often find ourselves stuck in traffic, staring at the back of cars, and some are quite unappealing to behold.

As the saying goes, beauty is subjective. However, it is also influenced by the perspective of the driver behind you. While we typically assess a car's aesthetics based on its front design, in real traffic situations we actually spend much more time observing the rear of the vehicles in front of us, rather than the fronts of those that briefly pass by.

This led us to consider the least attractive car rear ends currently available. We can certainly identify cars we find pleasing or unattractive at the front, but which models boast appealing backsides, and which fall short?

One model I currently dislike is the Hyundai Kona, which launched in late 2022. The elongated LED light strip at the front gives the Kona a modern appearance, which is mirrored at the rear. However, instead of integrating all the rear lights into the LED bar, Hyundai opted to add an additional set of light pods below that seem hastily designed. Additionally, the prominent dent above the rear wheelarch is unappealing on versions lacking the plastic trim, resembling damage from a cement truck.

Another contender on my list is the latest BMW X2. Although the German brand has produced some stunning cars, I have never found its coupe-style SUVs, dating back to the original 2008 X6, to be attractive. They often come off as awkward and boxy, and the soon-to-be-released 2024 X2 is among the worst.

The oddly designed double rear light clusters seem as though they were poorly grafted onto the trunk lid from the rear quarter panel, and the rear bumper is quite chaotic. Upgrading to the M Sport trim typically elevates a BMW's design, but not with the M2, which features a large area of unrefined ribbed black plastic that resembles the look of a George Foreman grill.

Other unfortunate rear designs include the Land Rover Discovery, whose misplaced license plate has looked peculiar nearly nine years after its debut, as well as Hyundai's attempt to rival the Land Rover Defender, the Santa Fe. While I appreciate the Hyundai's front design, I'm less fond of the rear with its excessively low lights. And as a demonstration that too much detail can be detrimental, the overly intricate back end of the Mansory Lamborghini Urus deserves an honorable mention.
