Audi Q2 e-Tron revives the spirit of the A2 with its playful compact design.

Constructed on the MEB+ platform for enhanced range, space, and charging capabilities.

Set to debut next year in Europe, replacing the gasoline-powered Q2.

Do you remember the unique Audi A2 from the early 2000s? This ultra-light compact, built on an aluminum spaceframe, was Audi's competitor to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It embodied the essence of the BMW i3 before the i3 had even come into existence—much ahead of its time for its own market success.

Launched in 1999 and produced until 2005, the Audi A2 had five engine options, including the record-breaking 60 hp 1.2 TDI, which consumed merely 2.99 liters per 100 kilometers (78.7 mpg). Only 176,377 units were manufactured. Although sales fell short, the A2 has since gained cult status as a modern classic.

The original Audi A2 was available from 1999 to 2005.

Now, almost thirty years later, Audi seems poised to recapture the essence of the A2 with the upcoming Q2 e-Tron. This model will fit below the Q4 e-Tron, effectively succeeding the outgoing petrol-powered Q2. It will share fundamental frameworks with Volkswagen Group's next-generation small electric vehicles, serving as the new entry point into the e-Tron lineup.

      Visual Nostalgia

This writer’s illustration based on spy shots reveals a profile reminiscent of the old A2, with a more sloped windshield and a roofline that sharply decreases toward the C-pillar. The proportions lean more toward a hatchback-on-stilts design rather than the crossover look of the previous model.

Up front, sleek micro-LED daytime running lights are positioned high and wide, while the main headlamp units are lowered into the bumper. A striking, closed grille surrounded by sharp lines and angular air intakes gives the smallest e-Tron a bold appearance.

In profile, deep sculpting appears on the lower sections, and the door handles have been replaced with winglet-style features reminiscent of the Mach-e. The rear design is more playful, featuring a high-mounted spoiler that visually divides the rear glass (a nod to the old A2), while the tailgate is modernized with a full-width LED light bar.

      Interior Smarts

Inside, the Q2 e-Tron is expected to reflect the design themes seen in the Q3 and Q5. A curved, high-resolution digital driver’s display will be complemented by a central MMI touchscreen. Audi’s AI-driven voice assistant will likely be standard, supporting downloadable applications, including media streaming (like Disney+) and navigation services.

Additional features will include a range of level 2 semi-autonomous driving assists, ambient lighting, and eco-friendly trim options. Despite its compact exterior, the flat electric vehicle floor should provide ample cabin space, while luggage capacity is anticipated to be slightly below the Q4 e-Tron’s 520 liters.

      Platform and Powertrain

Under the surface, the Q2 e-Tron is expected to utilize Volkswagen Group’s new MEB+ architecture. This upgraded platform aims to offer a more rigid chassis, improved energy efficiency, and significantly quicker charging compared to previous MEB models.

Technical leaks suggest that a front-wheel-drive base model will generate 201 hp (150 kW), paired with a 63 kWh battery expected to provide approximately 250 miles (402 km) of driving range. More powerful variants could top 268 hp (200 kW), potentially equipped with a larger battery capable of up to 348 miles (560 km) according to the WLTP cycle.

Quattro versions with dual motors are also in development, targeting drivers in colder climates or those seeking more traction and performance, with RS-badged performance trims rumored to be forthcoming.

      Rivals and Reveal

The Q2 e-Tron, possibly named the A2 depending on final decisions, will face competition from an increasing number of small premium EVs. Rivals will include the Volvo EX30, BMW iX1, Smart #1, Alfa Romeo Junior, and Mini Aceman.
