GM Rewards gives owners the chance to earn points through offers and minor tasks.

Each 100 points is worth $1 off purchases or GM Financial loans.

A viral post claims that 5.9 million points paid off an Escalade-V.

It's not every day that someone uses loyalty points to pay off a luxury SUV, but that's what allegedly happened with a particularly clever owner of a 2024 Cadillac Escalade-V.

Instead of paying tens of thousands of dollars in cash, they supposedly settled their loan using GM Rewards points acquired through a noticeable loophole in GM’s system. However, if you're considering attempting something similar, don't bother, as that option has quietly shut down.

General Motors created its Rewards program to foster long-term brand loyalty. As reported by Resell Calendar, which initially shared the story, owners could earn points from their purchases or by completing simple promotional tasks, like watching short videos or filling out surveys.

Each 100 points is valued at $1, and these points can be redeemed for GM merchandise, accessories, auto parts, and can even be used to reduce a loan from GM Financial.

      The Loophole

The problem? Apparently, points could be transferred between accounts without any identity checks. Additionally, GM’s promotional platform, Route to GM Rewards, allocated up to 16,000 points per account just for engaging with its media content. This combination created an ideal opportunity.

People reportedly began signing up for dozens, sometimes hundreds, of accounts, either manually or possibly using automated scripts. Some worked independently while others recruited friends and family. Regardless, they allegedly collected thousands of dollars in points without spending anything.

      How Far Did It Go?

One viral social media post claimed that the owner of a 2024 Cadillac Escalade utilized 5,937,000 GM Rewards points, equivalent to $59,370, to pay off their loan entirely. The screenshots seemed credible enough for the story to spread widely.

Nevertheless, there’s no confirmation regarding how long it took to accumulate that many points or how exactly the person achieved it. GM has not verified the specific claim, and no independent sources have corroborated it either.

What GM has acknowledged is that the program was being misused. "We are aware of the misuse of the Route to GM Rewards promotion, leading to its suspension as we assess our next steps," a spokesperson told The Autopian.

As GM Authority reported, the automaker quickly discontinued its promotional offers, meaning customers can no longer earn points as easily. There has been no communication about whether it intends to reintroduce the program, but if it does, we suspect it won’t allow customers to exploit the system again.
