Shoei and EyeLights have developed the first fully integrated AR helmet.
The GT-Air 3 Smart projects speed and alerts within the rider’s field of vision.
It features built-in communications, including intercom support without the need for external devices.
One of the top names in motorcycling believes that the future of riding goes beyond just feeling the wind; it also involves displaying information directly in the rider’s line of sight. Renowned Japanese helmet manufacturer Shoei has collaborated with French tech company EyeLights to introduce the world's first fully integrated augmented reality helmet.
The helmet, named the GT-Air 3 Smart, draws a fitting comparison to Iron Man's advanced headgear. This could be the closest experience for a road rider to owning Tony Stark’s high-tech helmet.
Heads-Up or Head Full of Data?
EyeLights has spent years perfecting compact heads-up displays for aftermarket applications, and this technology has now been seamlessly incorporated into Shoei’s premium touring helmet.
A nano OLED projector projects speed, navigation, phone calls, and police radar alerts into the rider's view, at what the company claims is the equivalent distance of 3 meters (118 inches) ahead. This eliminates the need to glance down at the dashboard or search for a phone, providing information right where it’s needed.
The primary concern with HUDs, which have been present in the automotive sector for over two decades and are now becoming increasingly advanced, has always been their visibility in bright sunlight. EyeLights asserts that their new OLED system remains readable even when sunlight directly hits the visor.
Additionally, the company claims that the system can enhance reaction times by 32 percent, presenting a unique case where a gadget could be seen as both distracting and beneficial to safety simultaneously.
Comms and Comfort
However, the GT-Air 3 Smart is more than just a display; it is equipped with a fully integrated audio and communication system featuring speakers, a microphone with noise cancellation, and a universal intercom compatible with nearly all brands.
It operates both online and offline and supports voice assistants for hands-free operation. Shoei mentions that all components, including the power supply and wiring, are concealed within the helmet shell to avoid unsightly protrusions, and the built-in battery provides up to 10 hours of use between charges.
Deliveries are set to commence next June, but pre-orders are currently available for $1,199. Priced at about twice that of the standard GT-Air 3, it represents a significant investment. Nonetheless, much like purchasing a quality set of protective gear, it could be a small price to pay for potentially preventing an accident or avoiding a hospital visit.
