NY Driver Tries DMV Fraud Using Crayons and Markers | Carscoops
New York State Police found counterfeit inspection documents created with crayons during a traffic stop.
About 15 hours ago, troopers noticed hand-drawn inspection and registration stickers. These fake documents were made using pen, marker, and crayon. The driver received several tickets, and the vehicle was impounded.
There’s no doubt that New York has its share of lawbreakers. From obstructed license plates to unauthorized swimmers, the state's police have a lot to monitor. Add to that list the custom, homemade inspection and registration stickers.
These aren't sophisticated forgeries; rather, they resemble projects that a determined fourth grader might produce with pride using crayons.
What Were They Thinking?
On November 20, police stopped a vehicle for what they suspected were altered license plates. During the stop, the officer noticed the registration stickers were hand-drawn and appear to have been colored with crayon and marker.
Authorities noted that one additional element, “an impressive amount of confidence,” contributed to this creation.
It's unclear what the driver expected the stickers to achieve, other than ultimately receiving a citation. The stickers featured uneven lettering, misspellings such as “New York Safety Emissions,” and colored boxes that vaguely imitated the actual DMV stickers displayed on New York windshields.
As a friendly reminder, State Police remarked in their Facebook post, which has since gone viral with over 30,000 reactions and 3,000 comments, “arts and crafts supplies do not constitute valid documentation.”
Public reactions ranged from disbelief to admiration for the artistry (despite its illegality). One commenter noted, “Illegal, but creative.” Another joked, “We have DMV at home.”
Officers issued multiple tickets to the owner and towed the vehicle. They did not disclose any information regarding the driver's identity or any additional charges they may face.
What Are The Consequences?
That said, in New York, falsifying these stickers can lead to serious legal repercussions. In addition to fines, those convicted could face criminal charges that could remain on their record for years.
To be fair, much of the legally questionable behavior observed in New York seems significantly more troubling compared to this incident, which almost seems humorous in comparison.
