Kia Issues Recall for 250,000 Sedans Due to Potentially Melting Gas Tanks | Carscoops
A buildup of air within the tank of MY21-24 Kia K5s may push it against the exhaust, thereby creating a fire hazard.
Kia is recalling K5 sedans due to potential fuel tank damage that could lead to fires.
A defective purge control valve may cause the tank to expand, leading to contact with the exhaust.
Dealers will inspect and replace any affected tanks at no cost across the nation.
This week, Kia’s K5 sedan is in the news, though not for the reason drivers might be hoping, as they could be getting uncomfortably warm. The concern involves a fire under the rear floorpan, prompting Kia to recall 250,547 units of this midsize sedan in the US.
This type of recall understandably makes owners grip their steering wheels a bit more firmly while awaiting a solution, even if the remedy is relatively simple.
According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem pertains to the purge control check valve within the K5’s fuel system.
In some vehicles, pressurized air can migrate from the intake manifold into the fuel tank. This could cause the tank to expand significantly, potentially reaching the exhaust and leading to melting. A concerning situation indeed.
Kia became aware of this issue after receiving multiple complaints regarding fuel leaks or the odor of spilled fuel. Engineers determined that the cause was linked to wear in the purge control system check valve, which allows pressure to accumulate inside the tank.
The recall includes specific 2021–2024 K5 models produced at Kia’s Georgia facility, limited to those equipped with the 1.6-liter T-GDI turbo engine, excluding the 2.5-liter version.
On a positive note, the company reports that it has not been informed of any injuries or incidents connected to this defect, and owners can continue driving while awaiting repairs.
Kia plans to begin notifying owners about the recall in January. At that time, they will be able to arrange for a dealer appointment, where technicians will inspect the tank and replace it if any damage is detected.
Additionally, even if the tank appears to be in good condition, the malfunctioning valve responsible for this issue will be replaced to prevent future occurrences.
