Indiana’s blackout plate has surpassed 40,000 units sold within just two months.

The plates are priced at $45 for new cars and $9.50 as replacements.

Similar plates are available in states like Texas, Iowa, and New York.

The blackout license plates in Indiana are turning out to be a significant success and a substantial source of revenue for the state. Launched two months ago, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) reports that more than 40,000 new plates have already been sold, indicating that residents have quickly taken to the sleek design.

The new plate features a black background with white lettering, in contrast to the conventional white with dark blue or black characters, presenting a cleaner, more elegant aesthetic that resonates with car enthusiasts who favor understated design choices.

      A Simple Shift

Drivers can procure the blackout plate for $45 upon registering a new vehicle or can replace their current plate for a nominal fee of $9.50 before it expires.

In a statement to The Republic, Indiana Governor Mike Braun noted that the new plates have already brought in over $1.3 million in revenue, which will be utilized to enhance the operations of the BMV. This funding will support advancements in digital tools, streamline transaction processes, and widen self-service options.

“This serves as an excellent example of our state agencies discovering innovative, entrepreneurial methods to provide value to Hoosiers while generating revenue to better serve them,” Braun expressed. “I commend the BMV’s initiatives and anticipate how the money raised from these sales will be utilized to enhance the BMV into a more efficient one-stop shop for residents.”

      An Idea Gaining Popularity

It is somewhat surprising that not all US states provide black plates like these, as it appears to be a straightforward way to raise revenue while also offering drivers a sleeker option. States that do have black plates include Iowa, Texas, New York, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

BMV Commissioner Kevin Garney echoed the Governor’s remarks: “This new Blackout plate is a win-win for Hoosiers. They now have a stylish new plate that they are thrilled about, and as a bonus, the revenue generated from their purchase is directly reinvested into enhancing future BMV experiences, benefiting not just themselves but all Hoosiers.”
