The 2028 A4 e-tron is set to be an affordable, high-tech electric vehicle, according to reports.
Audi appears to be preparing for the launch of a new A4 e-tron model in 2028.
This forthcoming vehicle will reportedly utilize the newly developed SSP platform.
We can also anticipate a striking design influenced by the Concept C.
Both BMW and Mercedes are planning to release electric variants of their popular 3-Series and C-Class, namely the i3 and EQ Tech models, respectively. This situation puts Audi in a unique position, as they currently offer multiple electric crossovers but lack an affordable sedan.
That, however, is expected to change with the introduction of the completely new A4 e-tron in 2028. Not only will it bring back the classic name, but it will also introduce a fresh platform and a bold new appearance inspired by the Concept C, distinguishing it from the existing ICE-powered A5, which took the place of the previous A4 in the lineup.
New Foundations
As per Autocar, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner has confirmed that the A4 e-tron will be built on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which will also be utilized by several other vehicles in the Volkswagen Group. These are likely to include the next-generation Golf, along with the Skoda Octavia and Cupra’s flagship crossover.
While details about the platform remain scarce, it is expected to be more advanced than the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that supports the Porsche Macan Electric, as well as the A6 and Q6 e-trons.
Additionally, the A4 e-tron may be the first Audi model to incorporate software developed in cooperation with Rivian. This collaboration aims to create “software-defined vehicles” that become “more intelligent, more sustainable, and more enjoyable over time.”
Döllner stated to the publication, “We are heavily working on it with the Rivian-Volkswagen joint venture, currently building prototypes and collaborating closely, so the first cars are already in development.” He indicated that the software will launch in two new vehicles and help decrease complexity.
Beyond the technical updates, the A4 e-tron will adopt the new ‘Audi brand face.’ This implies that we can expect a minimalist front end characterized by a vertically oriented rectangular grille, likely accompanied by sleek four-element headlights, as Audi previously stated this will define their visual identity.
At this stage, little else is publicly known about the vehicle, but Döllner mentioned that we can anticipate “fewer virtual buttons” and more dedicated physical controls. He noted that this is what customers desire, and it's difficult to argue with that.
