Sierra Grille Trim Detaches Even After GM Recall Solution | Carscoops
Months after a grille recall, a GMC Sierra owner claims his dealer's repair failed at high speeds.
A 2022 GMC Sierra owner reported that his grille piece came loose after it was repaired under the recall. GM's official recall solution involved the addition of extra fasteners and adhesive on the affected trucks. Over 70,000 units were previously recalled due to failures in grille attachment.
Full-size pickup trucks are designed to be durable and ready for tough conditions. However, this reputation has been called into question after GM announced a recall on certain GMC Sierras a few months back, as they had difficulty withstanding high winds. Specifically, the upper grille component could detach while driving on the highway. Now, one owner has claimed that his grille dislodged after he had GMC address the issue under the recall, and he has photos to support his claim.
Grille Problems at High Speeds
The initial recall impacted more than 70,000 trucks, each at risk for cracking attachment points. Should those points fail, the upper chrome grille would potentially detach and end up in traffic. By February, GM had already identified over 1,200 cases of this issue affecting customers. Now they have one more occurrence, involving a truck that purportedly had the recall repair completed.
The original poster on Reddit shared two images of the detached part along with his truck on the roadside. He stated, “I just assumed, they’re GMC. They have a recall. They’ve got tons of engineers. They probably found a safe and effective way to secure the grille to ensure it never came off,” he expressed. “Wrong.” The recall fix involved new fasteners and additional adhesive, but the photos show that the adhesive did not hold.
Is This a Unique Incident or a Bigger Issue?
After thorough searches on various forums and Facebook groups, this seems to be the only instance of a grille detaching after the recall remedy. We'll monitor for additional reports. For now, it may just be a case of the remedy not executed according to GM specifications. This remains a possibility until more cases arise. It certainly wouldn't be the first instance where a recall did not adequately resolve a problem.
