It's well known that Lewis Hamilton's inaugural season in a Ferrari hasn't gone smoothly, which was somewhat expected. The past two decades have demonstrated that former F1 champions tend not to clinch victories with Ferrari. However, there is a possibility we could see an impressive road car emerge from this, specifically one crafted by Hamilton for himself. Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the seven-time champion disclosed this week that he has sold all his cars but is still hoping for one particular model bearing the Prancing Horse emblem.

The decision to sell Hamilton’s car collection follows his sale of a private jet about six years ago to lessen his carbon footprint. Motorsport.com has compiled a list of cars Hamilton is thought to have owned throughout the years, as there isn’t a single comprehensive list available. As one would expect, it features numerous rare and sought-after Mercedes models, alongside a few Ferraris and, most notably, a McLaren F1. Noteworthy vehicles in his collection included a custom Pagani Zonda 760 LH made exclusively for him; the AMG Project One; a six-wheeled Mercedes G63; two LaFerraris; and a Shelby Cobra along with an original GT500 styled after Eleanor.

There’s certainly a lot of impressive machinery there, but none of it is currently in Hamilton's possession. Understandably, it seems he might make one or two exceptions for cars produced by his employer.

“I don’t have any cars anymore,” Hamilton stated in an interview when asked about potentially buying an F80. “I’ve sold all my cars. I’m more into art now. If I were to get a car, it would definitely be the F40. But that’s really a work of art.”

Did we not all foresee this? Ferrari

Honestly, if you had to choose just one car to own, the F40 would be an excellent pick. Hamilton's admiration for Enzo Ferrari's final creation is well-known, especially since he expressed in March his desire to design a modern version, complete with a manual transmission, which he dubbed “F44” in homage to his racing number.

Maranello seems receptive to the idea, as the chief product development officer of the automaker mentioned to MotorTrend earlier this year that a manual version is “something that could be in the future.” The last Ferrari to offer a manual transmission was the California, which provided a three-pedal option as recently as 2012.

The peculiarity of this situation is that Hamilton's aspiration to own an F40 appears quite realistic, not only due to his wealth. It is the least exclusive among Ferrari's iconic models, dating back to the 288 GTO, with over 1,300 units produced—about 1,000 more than the F50, which doesn't hold as fond a place in the hearts of fans. Now, if he were aiming for a 288 GTO Evoluzione, he might encounter greater difficulty.

The seven-time F1 champion has finished his car ownership, having sold off his entire collection. However, he would make an exception for a particular classic Ferrari.
