Google Maps Glitch Causes Daily Reboots in Some Rivians | Carscoops
Rivian owners are expressing frustration over their navigation systems frequently freezing after the latest update.
Recently, Rivian introduced features from Google Maps, yet users are now encountering GPS malfunctions.
Many owners report that their navigation freezes unless they execute soft resets.
This problem seems to impact certain Rivian models while not affecting all updated vehicles.
A new software update aimed at enhancing Rivian’s navigation has led to dissatisfaction among some owners. Last month, the firm released an upgrade that incorporated Google Maps into its built-in navigation, adding functionalities such as Google Places and real-time updates on lane closures and accidents from the Google Maps community.
However, a number of Rivian owners have reported that their GPS systems regularly freeze after the update, raising concerns that the implementation may have been somewhat hasty by the manufacturer.
Affected Owners vs. Those Unaffected
Several Rivian owners have shared their experiences on Reddit. One user stated that their GPS freezes every other day since the Google Maps update, with the only solution being a soft reset of the infotainment system, achieved by pressing the far left and right buttons on the steering wheel for about 15 seconds.
Multiple users echoed this issue, indicating that a soft reset is the sole method to restore navigation functionality. Interestingly, it appears that not all Rivians are affected; owners of the newer Gen2 R1S and R1T models report that the updated system with Google integration is functioning properly. A few drivers of earlier Gen1 vehicles also noted that they experienced no problems after the update.
In one instance, an owner mentioned that the navigation tab on their infotainment display becomes non-responsive every two to three days and requires a reset. Even when it operates, it mistakenly identifies their current location as their home, irrespective of their actual position. Another R1S owner commented on Reddit that they have not faced any freezing issues, but the system's search function has stopped working.
Temporary Solutions as Rivian Looks into the Issue
It is likely that a software glitch is responsible for the problem, and if Rivian is aware of it, they might be working on a solution. Carscoops has reached out to the company for a statement. In the meantime, owners experiencing this glitch may need to continue performing resets every few days.
