The Only Type of Car That Makes F1 Champion Verstappen Cringe—and You Likely Own One | Carscoops
In a recent interview with Chris Harris, Verstappen shared some of the strategies that have contributed to his success.
Max Verstappen criticized front-wheel drive vehicles as dull and anti-driving in a new video.
The Dutch Formula 1 champion previously drove an FK8 Honda Civic Type R, a well-regarded front-wheel drive car.
His comments were made during a promotional event for the Mustang GTD alongside Chris Harris.
Max Verstappen stands out as one of the most formidable drivers in contemporary Formula 1, boasting four world championships and an impressive array of records that may stand for years to come. His pure driving talent is unmistakable. However, there is one type of vehicle he has never been fond of: those that deliver power through the front wheels.
Having grown up racing go-karts and open-wheel cars, the Dutch World Champion is clearly most experienced with rear-wheel drive vehicles. This could explain his extraordinary driving skills, which allow him to easily identify a car's limits. Recently, he took the wheel of the Ford Mustang GTD with seasoned automotive journalist Chris Harris and expressed his dislike for front-wheel drive cars.
“It’s the worst thing ever,” he stated.
When asked directly if he enjoys front-wheel drive, Verstappen firmly replied, “No, no, I think it’s really boring. Yeah, it’s really boring. When you drive it in a car, it’s for me, just like anti-driving.” He also mentioned that he has experienced front-wheel drive cars in simulators, calling it “the worst thing ever.”
Verstappen’s Experience with Honda
While many might agree that front-wheel drive is akin to wrong-wheel drive, numerous outstanding FWD performance cars have been produced over the years. Among them is the FL5-generation Honda Civic Type R, which Verstappen has driven on several occasions. He previously drove an FK8 Civic Type R, as Honda provided engines for the Red Bull Formula 1 team.
The video featuring Verstappen and Harris is definitely worth a full watch. Starting next year, Ford will collaborate with Red Bull Powertrains on the F1 team's hybrid powertrains, marking one of the first instances where the reigning World Champion could promote Ford.
In the first part of the video, the F1 winner occupies the passenger seat of a classic Ford RS200 before taking the keys to the new Mustang GTD towards the video's conclusion.
