The passenger airbag has the potential to tear, raising the risk of injury.
JLR is recalling nearly 21,000 Range Rover Evoques due to a passenger airbag problem.
Models from 2021 to 2025 may feature a passenger airbag that could rip upon deployment.
The company reports that it has not identified any injuries or accidents connected to this defect.
Airbags are a vital safety component and have saved over 50,000 lives in the United States. Nonetheless, there has been a concerning number of airbag-related recalls recently.
The latest recall comes from Land Rover, which is addressing issues with 20,999 Range Rover Evoques from the 2021-2025 model years. These luxury crossovers are fitted with passenger airbags that might tear during deployment, heightening the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Additionally, the government has indicated that a torn airbag could allow hot gases to escape during deployment, potentially burning passengers.
A review queries whether the Range Rover Evoque still merits the excitement in a saturated market.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that unusual airbag deployments were identified during testing, prompting an investigation in May 2023. This investigation involved Jaguar Land Rover and two suppliers, and initially, no defects or safety risks were found.
However, as the investigation progressed, a “variability in the folds of the airbag” was discovered. This was identified as a “likely contribution” to the abnormal airbag deployments and was labeled an “unreasonable safety risk.”
In an abundance of caution, Jaguar Land Rover opted to proceed with the recall, although the company is not aware of any injuries or accidents linked to the issue. The remedy is relatively simple; dealers will replace the passenger airbag module and related components. Notifications to owners are expected to be sent out in late August.
