A recent study by Allstate highlights the American cities where drivers are most and least likely to be involved in collisions.

According to the report, cities in the Northeast are deemed the most hazardous for drivers, with Boston being ranked the worst, followed by Washington, Baltimore, and Worcester. On the other hand, drivers in Brownsville and Boise are the least likely to experience an accident.

When was the last time you found yourself in a minor car accident? Some may have the good fortune of never having faced one, but if you want to maintain that luck, you should avoid Boston, MA, if you're considering a road trip or moving. The latest findings classify Boston drivers as the most prone to accidents.

As per Allstate's data, Bostonians typically drive for just 3.1 years between accidents, starkly contrasting with the safest city, which averages 14.2 years, and the national average of 10.5 years. The statistics suggest that the northeastern U.S. resembles a scene from a chaotic racing game, with coastal cities taking the top five rankings.

Washington, DC, follows Boston as the next most dangerous city at 3.9 years, with Baltimore, MD (4.2 years), Worcester, MA (4.3 years), and Springfield, MA (4.6 years) rounding out the list.

However, cities on the West Coast also keep auto body shops busy. The Californian cities of Glendale, Los Angeles, and Oakland are among the ten least safe, although Allstate reports they are slightly safer than in the previous 2025 study.

Which city boasts an impressive 14.2-year interval between accidents? That honor goes to Brownsville, TX, closely followed by Boise, ID, where drivers average 13.9 years between mishaps. Fort Collins, CO ranks third safest with 13.4 years, Cary, NC drivers average 12.9 years, and Laredo, TX drivers achieve 12.8 years.

The data is derived from insurance claims filed during 2022-2023, focusing solely on accidents that resulted in property or vehicle damage claims. It does not include minor accidents or account for their severity, so it does not represent a comprehensive record of all collisions.

While it's likely that you're more at risk of a car accident in Boston than in other cities, if you value your clean insurance record, you might also consider avoiding interactions with cars displaying Boston license plates while driving elsewhere in the U.S. You can view Allstate's complete study of 200 U.S. cities below.
