The XC60 has overtaken the 240, becoming the best-selling Volvo overall.
Since the XC60 was launched in 2008, over 2.7 million crossovers have been purchased.
The 2026 XC60 features a mild refresh, including a new grille and an updated interior.
The Volvo 240 was launched in the summer of 1974, available as a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a practical five-door wagon. Known as the ‘brick,’ it was immensely popular, with a total production of 2,685,171 vehicles between 1974 and 1993.
Even though the last unit came off the assembly line in Gothenburg over 32 years ago, it has now been surpassed by the XC60. Volvo reports that since its debut in 2008, over 2.7 million XC60s have been sold, establishing it as the best-selling Volvo in history.
Additionally, the 2026 Volvo XC60 has been refreshed for the first time in nine years.
The XC60 can be seen as a successor to the 240 Estate, delivering a Scandinavian design and ample space for occupants or cargo. While the brand still offers wagons, the company recognized that “the SUV has effectively replaced the estate as the preferred family vehicle.” They noted that the success of the XC60 “clearly reflects the changing preferences of customers.”
Many people likely reminisce fondly about the 240, and Volvo’s Susanne Hägglund mentioned that during the 1980s, one could see a 240 in nearly every driveway in Sweden. However, she stated that “the XC60 has taken over that role in two significant ways. It has become both the family favorite and our all-time best-seller, which itself is the ultimate testament to a successful vehicle.”
The second-generation XC60 was introduced at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, with a facelift launched for 2026. It boasts an updated interior, featuring new cup holders, an enhanced wireless smartphone charger, and a larger 11.2-inch infotainment system, alongside new trim and upholstery choices.
Exterior updates are more understated, including a redesigned grille with diagonal lines. Buyers will also notice updated wheels and darker taillights.
