A unique Shelby Mustang 1000, created for David Yurman, will soon be available at auction.
Shelby produced only 20 Mustang 1000s, making it one of the rarest pony cars on the market.
This model is equipped with a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission.
It is notable as the last car approved by Carroll Shelby before his death.
Shelby’s Mustang GT500 and Super Snake have consistently ranked among the most impressive pony cars, but in 2012, the company introduced an even more extreme version known as the 1000. This package could be added to the existing GT500 and Super Snake models, featuring several enhancements that significantly boosted engine performance.
It was, without a doubt, a moment for Mustang aficionados to celebrate.
At its launch, the Shelby 1000 was the most powerful Mustang ever made, leaving other performance vehicles seemingly stationary. The engine featured a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 paired with a massive 3.6-liter Kenne Bell blower, and Shelby continued pushing the limits with new injectors, an upgraded fuel system, forged internals, and ported heads.
The outcome was a street-legal Mustang that generated 950 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque, enough to send chills through every Cars & Coffee gathering within a 50-mile radius. For those daring enough to seek even more power, a track version delivered a staggering 1,100 horsepower, with estimates suggesting the 1000 could reach 60 mph in approximately 3.7 seconds.
It is believed that only 20 Mustang 1000s were ever made, making it quite rare to find one on the pre-owned market. However, Mecum has acquired one, set to be auctioned next month.
Originally built for successful jeweler David Yurman, this car has only been driven 973 miles (1,565 km). If you prefer classic Mustangs and desire one with an abundance of horsepower (editor's note: shouldn’t all exciting pony cars be that way?), this might be the perfect choice for you.
Numerous upgrades were made to the Mustang to help manage the extraordinary horsepower. Modifications include an upgraded 9-inch rear end, new six-piston front and four-piston rear brake calipers, and a reinforced driveshaft.
Shelby also incorporated stiffer springs, sway bars, and bushings, along with a lightweight carbon fiber hood featuring functional air vents to ensure engine cooling.
Adding to its appeal is the fact that this was the last model overseen by Carroll Shelby before his death in May 2012. When you combine its powerful performance and rarity, it becomes a highly desirable vehicle.
At the time of its release, the Shelby 1000 had a starting price of $200,000, which included the donor GT500 Ford Mustang. This price range reflects supercar levels, both then and now.
So, if you’re feeling adventurous (and have some extra funds available), you may want to take a look at Mecum Auctions’ listing to see how much this exceptional Mustang could sell for. Just be prepared for the price – it’s likely to be significant.
