This SUV Might Be The Most Fascinating Project Fiat Has Undertaken In The Last Ten Years | Carscoops
Fiat teased two SUVs last year along with several concept vehicles, including the Grande Panda, which has now entered production.
The new Fiat Fastback will merge design elements from the previous Tipo, Egea, and the Fastback itself.
Additionally, a larger GigaPanda SUV may be released with battery options of 44 kWh and 54 kWh.
Both forthcoming models are anticipated to feature combustion and hybrid powertrain options.
Fiat is enhancing its offerings with two new models slated for launch within the next year, aiming to update its range with larger, more versatile vehicles based on Stellantis’ economical platform. These new additions are intended to address a gap in Fiat’s lineup and build on established nameplates and concepts. The first model, currently labeled as the Fastback, is anticipated to debut before the end of 2024.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, the new Fastback will utilize familiar influences. Reports suggest it is being developed as a combination of the now-defunct Tipo, the existing Fastback available in Brazil, and the Turkish Egea. This combination is expected to yield a practical compact crossover with widespread appeal. While powertrain options haven't been confirmed, preliminary indications suggest a variety including internal combustion engines, hybrids, and possibly a fully electric version.
GigaPanda: Fiat’s Larger Venture
However, it is likely Fiat’s second new SUV that will catch the most attention. Currently named GigaPanda, it will be significantly larger than the new Grande Panda and will act as a sister model to the new Citroen C3 Aircross, available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.
A concept car unveiled by Fiat in early 2024 offered a glimpse at this new model. Featured in a vibrant purple hue, the concept boasted a retro-inspired exterior with prominent pixel LED lights reminiscent of those seen on some Hyundai EVs. Fiat's head of design, François Leboine, commented to Auto Express that modifications would be made for the production version.
“I cannot say we’ll do it [exactly] like this,” he stated regarding the concept. “But we’ve worked on this vehicle family, and they are ready. The [Grande] Panda [concept] was somewhat exaggerated, but all the cues were there. That’s more or less what will happen [with GigaPanda].”
Familiar Technology, Versatile Powertrains
Similar to the new Fiat Fastback, the GigaPanda will offer a range of powertrains. This may include the same 44 kWh and 54 kWh battery packs available in the Citroen C3 Aircross, in addition to Fiat’s 1.2-liter mild-hybrid system. More conventional petrol engines are also expected, along with potential ethanol options for markets like Brazil.
Whether either model will significantly alter Fiat’s standing in the global market remains uncertain, but at the very least, they are set to introduce much-needed variety to a lineup that has felt somewhat limited in recent years.
