A startup based in Poland has developed a jet-powered hoverbike that can reach speeds of 124 mph.
The Volonaut Airbike is seven times lighter than a traditional motorcycle. Its creator is the Polish engineer responsible for the Jetson One drone, priced at $92,000.
Motorcycles are often considered the fastest means of navigating through city traffic, thanks to their ability to weave between cars. However, the Volonaut Airbike offers an even quicker alternative while eliminating the risks associated with open car doors or sudden lane changes.
Resembling a real-life Speeder Bike from "Return of the Jedi," the Airbike is designed by Polish entrepreneur Tomasz Patan, known for his innovative flying personal transport inventions. He is also the mind behind the Jetson One, a quad-rotor eVTOL capable of carrying a passenger, which gained attention in 2022.
Unlike the Jetson One, which operates using propellors similar to a large DJI drone, the smaller Volonaut Airbike utilizes a jet propulsion system, although Patan has not disclosed specific technical details about it.
He did, however, confirm that the Airbike can achieve a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h) and features a “proprietary stabilization system” enhanced by a flight computer that allows for automatic hovering and straightforward control for the rider.
With a design that is roofless and lacking screens, the Airbike offers a 360-degree view to help the rider feel more connected with the machine and experience a sense of total freedom.
The company's website states that the Airbike incorporates a significant amount of carbon fiber and 3D printed components to attain a curb weight that is seven times lighter than an average motorcycle. Given that a typical motorcycle weighs around 600 lbs (272 kg), the Airbike weighs an impressive 86 lbs (39 kg), although this weight could triple when a rider is onboard.
Three videos showcased on Volonaut's website highlight the Airbike’s capabilities, with the final video featuring a rider dressed as a Stormtrooper, potentially catching the eye of George Lucas’s legal team.
Patan did not provide specific information regarding the Airbike's release date or pricing but did indicate to Robb Report that it is “highly probable” to be available soon, with further details expected shortly.
