High-end automakers have made some curious choices over the years, but few are as baffling or unexpectedly charming as the Aston Martin Cygnet. A luxury label on a compact city car chassis seems almost like a joke, yet it exists. The Cygnet, which is fundamentally a rebadged Toyota/Scion iQ, served as Aston Martin’s way to meet fleet average emission standards.
In total, less than 1,000 units were made, and they seldom appear for sale. However, if you’re chasing Cygnet nostalgia and can’t find the authentic model, this customized iQ may be your best option.
This Scion, currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer, started as an ordinary iQ but has been meticulously modified to evoke the look of the Aston Martin Cygnet. The transformation occurred in 2014, and we previously covered it. Initially finished in Toyota’s Blizzard Pearl, the vehicle has since been repainted black, providing it with a more restrained, upscale aesthetic.
The exterior modifications are quite comprehensive. The most prominent alterations include a Cygnet-style front bumper, grille, and hood, which give the iQ a bolder presence. It also features the Cygnet’s stylized side skirts and rear bumper, while keeping the original iQ taillights instead of those from the actual Cygnet. Completing the appearance are new 16-inch wheels fitted with Aston Martin center caps.
This is not merely a visual upgrade. The owner has implemented several performance enhancements that exceed typical city car standards. The front brakes have been replaced with Wilwood calipers, complemented by drilled and slotted rotors. A TRD rear sway bar and new springs have also been added. Although a compact hatchback like this may not require such braking force, the enhancements certainly contribute positively.
While the exterior closely resembles the Cygnet, the interior mostly retains the standard iQ features. It boasts black leatherette upholstery with red stitching and has been upgraded with a Sony head unit. Under the small hood resides the original 97hp 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, which has been fitted with an HKS air intake.
The vehicle has been owned by the same lawyer from Texas since it was new, who claims to have spent around $10,000 on the modifications and enhancements. For those looking to experience the allure of a Cygnet without the collector's premium, this may be an unexpectedly enjoyable substitute. You can view the listing on Bring a Trailer here.
