A 50-Year-Old Arcade Racing Game Is Being Adapted into a Michael Bay Blockbuster | Carscoops
A new report from Hollywood reveals that Sega's classic arcade game, OutRun, is set to receive a live-action adaptation.
Originally released in the '80s, OutRun is an arcade racing game where players drive a Ferrari across Europe. The film will be produced by actress and automotive enthusiast Sydney Sweeney, with Michael Bay directing.
This adaptation marks the latest in a line of video game franchises moving to the silver screen, with a history that includes titles such as Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter. Car-themed games have similarly made their way into films, exemplified by 2014’s Need for Speed, starring Aaron Paul, and the more recent Gran Turismo featuring stars Orlando Bloom and David Harbour.
Even though OutRun, a game that debuted four decades ago, featuring both Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney was not on anyone's radar for 2025, it has been recognized as one of the most impactful racing games of its era.
In the original OutRun, players drive a convertible Ferrari Testarossa through various stages, aiming for the fastest time while dodging traffic. Originally confined to arcades, the game later launched on the Sega Master System in 1987.
According to Deadline, specifics about the plot are still unclear, but Jayson Rothwell has been identified as the screenwriter, and Toru Nakahara, who produced Sonic, is attached as a producer. Shuji Utsumi, president/COO of Sega, will supervise the project on behalf of the company.
As of now, Sweeney is confirmed as a producer but there is no indication of her possible appearance in the film. She is known for her appreciation of classic cars and runs a TikTok account focused on vintage vehicles, Syds_Garage. Meanwhile, Michael Bay has a reputation for dynamic action sequences, having directed several notable car-centric films, including the early Bad Boys movies and the initial five Transformers live-action films.
