When discussing mowers, it's essential to recognize that there are different levels involved. The battery-powered Ryobi push mower available at Lowe’s simply cannot match my Hustler, but then again, my Hustler is no match for a Ventrac 4200 VXD, as we are examining here. This model features four wheels per axle and an articulating frame, and since it was produced before 2013, it operates on a pre-emissions turbocharged diesel engine powerful enough to quickly clear a hillside.

The Ventrac models are equipped with a liquid-cooled three-cylinder Daihatsu diesel engine, with a displacement of 953cc and producing 31 horsepower. They incorporate a heavy-duty hydrostatic transmission that delivers torque and power to the all-wheel-drive system. While some 4200 VXDs were fitted with Kawasaki gas engines, not all were.

Take a look at that little turbo:

I located one for sale on Facebook Marketplace, and the listing states that this 2012 model is among the last turbo-diesel Ventracs manufactured before the EPA Tier 4 emissions standards came into force. These regulations mandated that equipment like this must include a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Many people express their frustrations regarding these two requirements due to the increased costs and complexities they introduce. Reliability is often a significant concern when it comes to emissions equipment. Regardless of personal opinions on the matter, the EPA implemented these components for compact tractors for a reason starting in 2013.

Essentially, this is a compact tractor. While it can operate a large mower deck connected to the power takeoff unit, it’s also capable of handling other attachments such as snow blowers or stump grinders. The 4200 VXD is a versatile tool that is compact enough to access areas where larger tractors may not fit, yet it still boasts impressive working abilities. Its double-dually configuration provides enhanced traction and stability, particularly in challenging or uneven conditions.

Naturally, this won't suffice for everyone. However, if you require a machine for mowing or clearing brush on property characterized by steep slopes, it serves as a specialized tool suited for that purpose. You will likely find it to be quite unique, which is a compelling reason for many to consider a purchase. Moreover, this model resembles the second-generation Cummins in the compact tractor market.
