Subaru Unveils Samurai-Inspired Armor for the New Forester in Japan | Carscoops
Japanese consumers have access to considerably more customization options compared to those in North America.
The sixth-generation Subaru Forester is set to debut in its home market of Japan.
It features choices like the Adventure Style and STI Sport styling packages.
This SUV is available with either a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine or a 2.5-liter hybrid variant.
The sixth-gen Forester is scheduled for release in Japan later this month, and Subaru has revealed details about the model tailored for the Japanese market. While the fundamental design remains familiar, the main distinction from the North American version is the extensive array of accessories, which includes rugged and sporty body kits, allowing buyers to personalize their SUV to their preferences.
The Japanese versions of the sixth-generation Forester offer three trims: the adventurous X-Break, the city-oriented Premium, and the straightforward Sport. Directly addressing the X-Break, the Adventure Style kit is its most compatible option, significantly altering its appearance.
The revamped grille featuring Subaru lettering, prominently angled lighting units, and high-mounted cladding on the doors combine to create a look likened to samurai armor—if samurai were to don molded plastic panels.
For those wanting to enhance the aesthetic even further, Subaru provides optional black decals for the hood, sides, and tailgate, adorned with mountain graphics. However, unlike the US-version Forester Wilderness, the Adventure Style package in Japan retains the standard suspension, lacking additional ground clearance.
STI Sport Enhances Style, Not Performance
On the other hand, Subaru presents STI Sport additions for those wanting a touch of performance style in their family SUV. This dealer-installed kit substitutes for the absent STI Sport trim available in earlier models.
This package includes a front splitter, side skirts, and rear bumper extensions, all optionally finished in red. Completing the look are a larger roof spoiler, black 18-inch wheels, and dual exhaust tips featuring the STI logo.Additionally, there is a performance muffler, which Subaru claims enhances throttle response and results in smoother acceleration, although there are no actual modifications to the powertrain or chassis.
Lastly, the Premium trim receives more subtle design enhancements. It features silver accents on the body and dark gray 19-inch alloy wheels, providing enough distinction to be noticeable in a parking lot without being overly flashy.
Inside, Subaru presents a variety of dealer-installed options, including aluminum pedals, all-weather seat covers, door scuff plates, window shades, and various practical upgrades for the cargo area, such as a “utility hook” designed for outdoor activities. These additions aim to enhance the Forester’s functionality for weekend excursions like hiking, camping, or fishing.
In Japan, the Forester will offer two powertrain choices: a turbocharged 1.8-liter gasoline engine and a more efficient self-charging hybrid.
The electrified variant was recently launched in the US model, delivering a combined output of 194 hp (145 kW / 197 PS) from a 2.5-liter engine paired with a single electric motor. The hybrid technology is sourced from Toyota, but Subaru’s boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD system are distinctive to the brand.
Subaru will provide additional information regarding the Japanese-spec Forester, including pricing, on April 17.
