A judge in Michigan is requiring shoplifters to wash cars in a Walmart parking lot.
This "humiliating" punishment aims to prevent thefts at a store located outside Flint.
The store is a significant crime hotspot, even featuring a reserved parking space for police.
As shoplifting increases, a Michigan judge is responding with a unique sentence. Offenders will be ordered to provide free car washes at a Walmart parking lot.
According to the Associated Press, Genesee County District Court Judge Jeffrey Clothier will mandate that those caught committing misdemeanor shoplifting at the Grand Blanc Township Walmart complete the so-called "Walmart wash." This location is near Flint, a city previously regarded as one of the most dangerous in America.

The judge stated that shoplifting is a significant issue in his jurisdiction, and a township official pointed out that the Walmart has a “designated ... parking space for police due to the frequent theft calls.”
Walmart is reportedly participating in this initiative by providing water and supplies for the car washes, which are expected to commence this spring. Approximately 100 individuals are anticipated to be assigned to wash cars during weekend events over the next few months.
Clothier acknowledged that the car washes would be “humiliating,” particularly if shoplifters encounter acquaintances. Nonetheless, he emphasized that “there are going to be consequences when you break the law” and mentioned that he would join in washing cars as well.
While it’s uncertain if this unconventional punishment will be effective, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton supports the idea, stating that if it “deters one person, then there’s some success there.”
According to Capital One, merely 2% of shoplifters are apprehended, and in 2023, stores suffered losses of $121.6 billion due to retail theft. It is estimated that around 9% of Americans have shoplifted at least once, with juveniles aged 12 to 16 being the most likely offenders.
