      The original engine in this 1985 FJ60 has been replaced with an LS3 V8.

      Power enhancements include a new intake system, cooling unit, and exhaust.

      The chassis has been rejuvenated with updated suspension, brakes, and steering.

      It’s not often that you see a vintage 4×4 revitalized with greater power and intent than when it first left the factory, but this 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 has achieved just that.

      When this 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 reached Legacy Overland’s workshop in Greenwich, Connecticut, the exterior was in rough shape, the interior was worn, and many components were affected by rust. Now, it has been transformed and boasts even more power than a brand-new Land Cruiser.

      To revive this Land Cruiser FJ60 and prepare it for future adventures, Legacy Overland started with the chassis. The team installed Old Man Emu springs and replaced the aging suspension bushings.

      The steering system was modernized, and the brakes were upgraded to a brand new setup, providing the classic SUV with a robust mechanical basis for the coming decades on the road.

      With the fundamentals addressed, they shifted focus to the engine compartment. The original engine was removed and replaced with a GM LS3 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8. This engine is paired with a new five-speed manual transmission and a Toyota transfer case. Enhancements such as a custom air intake, a rebuilt cooling system, and a stainless steel exhaust complete the powertrain modifications.

      Additionally, a new 43-gallon fuel tank, a new fuel pump and lines, and an updated wiring harness have been installed. Perhaps most notably, all these modifications were carried out without making drastic changes to the exterior. Thus, this FJ60 could easily be mistaken for a regular one, until its thunderous V8 roar gives it away.

      The exterior has not undergone radical changes. Instead, it features a fresh coat of its original Freeborn Red, along with new weatherstripping and glass seals. The classic bull bar and front winch have also been retained, emphasizing the FJ60’s utilitarian origins while keeping the enhanced power discreet.

      Inside, the cabin has been updated for the 21st century while maintaining its charm. It is now equipped with a Pioneer head unit featuring Apple CarPlay, supported by JBL speakers and a Rockford amplifier for improved sound quality. Up front, the driver and passenger are seated in new Recaro seats, which provide comfort and support without appearing out of place.

      Legacy Overland went further with the interior, adding two-tone leather and Alcantara upholstery, along with durable marine-grade carpeting for a polished look. LED lighting enhances the atmosphere, and the dashboard and other trim have been covered in new leather, completing the overall transformation.
