AMG’s Recent Appointment of a New CEO Clearly Indicates the Brand’s Direction | Carscoops
Former Porsche executive Stefan Weckbach has been appointed as the CEO of Mercedes-AMG, signaling the brand's focus on its electric future amid combustion controversies.
Weckbach, who led the development of the Taycan and possesses extensive EV engineering experience, will assume his new role on July 1, 2026, while also heading Mercedes-Benz’s Top End Vehicle (TEV) Group.
Before joining Volkswagen Group in 2023, Weckbach spent several years at Porsche in senior product positions, playing a significant role in the Taycan's development and this year’s Cayenne Electric.
This move comes as AMG intensifies its commitment to electric vehicles, and Weckbach’s expertise in high-performance EVs is timely.
Mercedes’ leadership has expressed enthusiasm for Weckbach's appointment. According to CTO Jörg Burzer, he merges in-depth product knowledge with strategic insight and experience in performance and luxury sectors, which is essential as he faces various challenges ahead.
AMG is already working on a custom four-door electric performance car, seen as a competitor to the Taycan. Having someone knowledgeable about Porsche’s EV sedan is advantageous for AMG.
Additionally, a flagship electric SUV is also on the horizon, a crucial component of AMG’s future strategy as the brand aims for high-margin, high-performance EVs with global reach.
Weckbach will also oversee smaller AMG models like the CLA, GLA, and GLB, which are transitioning into hybrids and EVs while still needing to uphold the AMG performance standard.
Another challenge for AMG is addressing the issues with the C63 S E Performance, with decisions regarding this model likely made prior to Weckbach’s arrival. While the turbo four-cylinder PHEV boasts impressive technology, it has not resonated well with enthusiasts.
A facelift set for 2026 will likely incorporate an inline-six engine, indicating that AMG still values the heritage that attracted fans to the brand. Reports also suggest the development of a new flat-plane crank V8, potentially for the C63 in the future.
Until Weckbach officially takes over, the current AMG leader, Michael Schiebe, will continue to serve in an interim capacity.
