The RAV4 and Ram 1500 lead Canada's most stolen vehicle rankings.
Trucks and SUVs dominate both the overall number and frequency of thefts.
In Ontario, the Lexus TX has become particularly appealing to car thieves.
If you're considering buying a new vehicle in Canada, you may want to verify if your chosen model has made it onto a different kind of list—one that’s criminal in nature.
The Équité Association has published its latest list of Canada’s Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles for 2024, which again highlights popular trucks and SUVs. However, there’s a concerning development for a less common model.
Which Models Are the Most Stolen?
This year, the Toyota RAV4, from the previous generation, is the most frequently stolen vehicle in Canada, with 2,080 thefts recorded, particularly enticing thieves with the MY21 version.
Considering that it seems like every second driveway in Canada has a RAV4, this likely comes as no surprise. The compact SUV checks all the boxes for thieves: high demand in resale markets, easy to sell parts, global appeal, and plenty of them on the streets.
Second place goes to the Ram 1500 Series with 2,018 thefts, closely followed by the Honda CR-V, which also recorded 1,911 thefts.
The Ford F-150, Canada’s best-selling vehicle, ranks fourth, while the top 10 list also includes the Jeep Wrangler, GM’s Silverado/Sierra, the Toyota Highlander, the Toyota Tundra, and the Lexus RX.
But the sheer number of thefts doesn't tell the complete story. Canadian thieves also have a unique approach to selecting their preferred targets, which entirely shifts the rankings.
Frequency Changes the Rankings
When examining theft frequency—measured as the number of vehicles stolen compared to those insured—the rankings change dramatically. The most frequently stolen vehicle nationwide is unexpectedly the Lexus TX.
Despite there being only 967 insured units of this SUV, an astonishing 144 were reported stolen. This equates to a striking 14.89 percent theft rate, or roughly one in seven. In Ontario specifically, the theft rate escalates to a staggering one in four!
This means, if you reside in Canada’s southernmost province and own a Lexus TX, investing in a secure garage might be a wise decision.
Following the Lexus TX, the Toyota Grand Highlander comes in at 4.29 percent, followed by the Land Rover Defender at 2.95 percent, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class at 2.73 percent, and the Range Rover at 2.44 percent. It seems that high-end SUVs are equally appealing to thieves as they are to everyone else.
On the lower end of the frequency list are the Lexus GX, Acura TLX, Jaguar F-Pace, Toyota Tundra, and Jeep Gladiator, with theft rates ranging from 1.45 to 1.88 percent.
Vehicle theft in Canada represents a billion-dollar challenge, and based on these figures, thieves certainly know what they want.
If your driveway resembles one straight out of a high-end outdoor catalog, it may be time to invest in a steering wheel lock, a good surveillance system, and perhaps a fiercely protective dog.
