What Occurs When Mazda’s Rotary Turbo Vision Transforms Into a Family Vehicle | Carscoops
Inspired by the Vision-X Coupe concept, a sports wagon like this would make for an ideal successor to the Mazda6 estate.
Mazda intends to introduce a high-performance rotary model within the next ten years.
The Vision-X Coupe features a plug-in hybrid rotary configuration producing an impressive 503 horsepower.
Renderings depict an eye-catching wagon version influenced by the concept.
Mazda has a long history of designing stunning concept cars, and at the Japan Mobility Show, the company showcased this talent with two new models. The highlight is the Vision-X Coupe, a sleek vehicle powered by a plug-in hybrid rotary engine that generates a robust 503 hp.
One can't help but ponder what it would be like if Mazda transformed this avant-garde coupe into something more unexpected, like a sports wagon.
With the discontinuation of the gasoline-powered Mazda6, which was offered as an estate, the vast majority of Mazda's lineup is now comprised of SUVs, apart from the Mazda3, MX-5, and, in select markets, the Mazda2 subcompact and BT-50 pickup.
The former Mazda6 has essentially been supplanted by Mazda’s partnership with Changan in China, yielding the all-electric 6e. This model is available in specific markets including Europe, China, and Australia, although an estate variant has yet to be introduced.
These renderings envision what a potential new Mazda6 estate might look like if the automaker drew inspiration from the Vision-X Coupe. One could imagine that if such a vehicle became a reality, it could rival the appeal of the BMW M3 Touring.
The design of the Vision-X Coupe naturally lends itself to an estate version. Its length is already impressive, measuring 7.3 inches (185 mm) longer than the Mazda6, so by slightly elevating the rear roofline, it could be easily transformed from a coupe-inspired sedan.
These renderings from Sugar Design also present the Vision-X estate with modified taillights. The concept’s unique rear lights, showcased in Tokyo, extend up both sides of the rear window, which may appear excessive. In this iteration, they terminate at the base of the window, creating a more aesthetically pleasing look.
Mazda unveiled the Vision-X Concept to envision its next generation of vehicles. Although there is no confirmation that it will lead to a production version, the brand aims to launch a high-performance rotary model by 2035, and the concept provides a preview of what such a powertrain could look like.
Its hybrid system combines a turbocharged rotary engine with an electric motor and a compact battery pack, delivering a total output of 503 hp and offering up to 99 miles (160 km) of all-electric range.
