      Toyota's new child-sized electric vehicle presents a charming take on independence while subtly introducing a future where AI determines what is safe for children.

      The Kids Mobi is a delightful, self-driving EV designed specifically for young kids. This concept includes AI technology, LED eyes, a canopy, and a comfortable interior. It was unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show along with other robotic innovations.

      At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Toyota's exhibit was filled with cutting-edge ideas, such as spider-like delivery robots and a six-wheeled Lexus minivan. However, one creation stood out and captivated attendees: the Kids Mobi, a bubble-shaped, self-driving EV designed exclusively for children.

      Positioned as a "safe and secure AI-powered personal mobility for kids," this concept merges the characteristics of a toy and a vehicle. It has a sleek pod-like design with enclosed wheels and animated LED "eyes" that mimic facial expressions. The roof sensors are designed to resemble ears, giving it the appearance of an animated character.

      The futuristic canopy opens upwards to reveal a comfortable single seat designed for children up to 130 cm tall (about 4 feet 3 inches). When a child gets inside, the canopy closes, and an AI assistant known as the “UX Friend” activates, engaging the young passenger in conversation and interactive play throughout the journey.

      While the Kids Mobi primarily utilizes autonomous technology for navigation, Toyota states that children can still engage in the driving experience, helping them feel a sense of autonomy. The company emphasizes, “It’s not just adults who want to drive and enjoy some time to themselves. Kids also want freedom of mobility. Just as adults have cars, kids deserve a reliable sidekick.”

      Allowing a child to ride alone in an autonomous pod may seem like a futuristic notion, yet Toyota believes it could ultimately be safer than traditional school buses.

      At present, the Kids Mobi remains a conceptual design, reflecting what the automaker describes as the “ultimate goal” of its AI x Robotics Data Center. As a result, the concept will continue to develop even after the show concludes.

      Additionally, the 2025 showcase includes another child-friendly concept from Toyota: the Chibibo. This quadrupedal robot walks alongside people and vehicles, serving as a last-mile delivery aid. As depicted in official renderings, it could assist a child in carrying their backpack, lunchbox, or other items that may be too heavy for them. Its spider-like design enables the robot to maneuver through narrow spaces and ascend stairs, delivering packages to locations inaccessible by vehicles. When not in use, it folds into a resting position, similar to a devoted robotic pet.
